Truck Fleets–Wheels & Profits

"If the wheels aren't turning, it isn't earning."

That's about as succinct as it gets. And the importance of that statement is matched only by the straightforward financial measurables called "cost per mile" and "total costs".

How well you manage your torque during the wheel installation process has a direct and an indirect effect on all three of the above.

Wheels are removed during a variety of maintenance procedures, with brake jobs, tire repair and tire replacement being the most frequent reasons. When the wheels are reinstalled on the vehicle, the wheel nuts are torqued. Torque them incorrectly and you get downtime for additional repairs and additional costs for components and labor - at a minimum. The consequences can get markedly worse. Manage your torque properly, and the downtime and repair costs get driven downwards. Manage your torque and your wheel installation processes properly and you can drive their costs to irreducible minimums.

The key word is "manage". Many, if not most, fleets think they manage the wheel installation process and the torque they put on the wheel nuts. With rare exceptions, they couldn't be more wrong. Management of this process requires that the training of the technician and the selection and maintenance of the tools be based in the real world where the laws of physics and the principles of solid management rule. No self-delusion, no wishful thinking, no nonsense.

We have the most soundly engineered torque management system on the market today. This system is not just a collection of hardware; it is a genuine management system with integrated intellectual, physical and procedural components.

Go to the Truck Fleet Solutions page to see the basics of the system and to compare it to your fleet’s current practices. Then call us for assistance in determining how you can bring your current system up to a “Best Practices” level and drive your costs down!

If you want a genuine education on quality costs, quality system principles, and how they affect this process, go to our White Papers section. There you will find papers that educate you on the principles of quality engineering, processes, and their intimate relationship with profitability.
